PORTO, SEAFOOD, ALBARIÑO WINE & SANTIAGO
Day 1: PORTO
Arrival in Porto and accommodations at your hotel (transfer is not included). Free afternoon. We recommend taking a stroll, on your own, along the banks of the Douro River. Meet your guide/escort this evening at 8:00pm in the lobby of your hotel. DINNER tonight of Portuguese specialties with local wine.
Day 2: PORTO
Breakfast. Morning city tour, including The Tower of the Clerics, the cathedral and the Market of Bolhao. Port wine will pervade all aspects of the tour. Free time for lunch, on your own after the tour. This afternoon we'll take you to nearby Vila Nova da Gaia, just on the other side of the Douro river for a visit to a local Port winery where you will be able to taste a "tawny" or "ruby" wines. Afterwards we'll take you on a delightful cruise on the along the picturesque Douro river to enjoy the amazing vistas. Return to your hotel after the cruise. Accommodations.
Day 3: PORTO-GUIMARAES-BRAGA-TUI (Spain)
Breakfast. Head to the north of Portugal, stopping first in the medieval city of Guimaraes where there stands out the Mansion of the Dukes of Braganca, from the 15th century, which reflects northern European architectural influences. Lunch on your own Taking smaller back roads, we soon arrive at the Baroque city of Braga, where we may visit the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus, on the outskirts. In the center we wander the lively walking streets which lead to the impressive cathedral. We continue north and in less than an hour find ourselves in the fertile lands of Galicia. First stop will be Tui, where we will visit its Gothic cathedral, on the banks of the River Miño, which forms the natural border between Portugal and Spain. Accommodations in the Parador of Tui or similar.
Day 4: TUI-A GUARDA-BAIONA-PONTEVEDRA
Breakfast. Today we will hear the roar of the Atlantic and its fjord-like bays. First we willl ascent a natural watchtower, Mt. Santa Tecla, with impressionate views over the estuary of the Mino River. Then along the coastline to Baiona, which town played a part in the history of Columbus and the Discovery of America; the Porto of Baiona was first to receive news of the “new world”. Enjoy a LUNCH with wine in Baiona. Continuing up the coast, we pass the Ria of Vigo and then that of Pontevedra, on which bank sits the historic city of the same name. There we can stroll its narrow streets which are bordered by Boroque mansions and unusual churches like “A Peregrina”, whose base is in the form of a shell, testifying to its relation to the Jacobean tradition (St. James). Day 5: PONTEVEDRA-COMBARRO-RIA DE AROUSA-O GROVE-CAMBADOS-SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA
Breakfast. First a brief stop in the charming fishing village of Combarro, with many “horreos” (granite grain storing structures which reflect Galician architecture). Passing the Ria of Arousa past the sandy area of A Lanzada where there is a beautiful chapel and on to O Grove port. From there we will see, via a short boat trip, the importance of the mussel industry; hundreds of floating platforms raise most of the mussels consumed in Europe. There will be a “tasting” and sampling of local mussels during the journey. Continue by land to Cambados for a visit to a winery producing the famous Albariño white wine, for a tasting at a beautiful country mansion. Continue to Santiago for a brief evening orientation tour. Day 6: SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA
Breakfast. A local guide will show us many of the interesting corners of this lovely city, which is in fact a open air museum and Patrimony of Humanidad. We will see not only the interior of the colossal cathedral containing the Tomb of St. James (Santiago), but eh huge Plaza of O Obradoiro, the lively market and the constant coming and going of the students of the University of Santiago, one of the oldest and most prestigious in Spain. Day 7: SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA
Breakfast. End of tour. Transfer out not included.
