Description
VACATION IN A MONASTERY
Choosing the Pousada of Santa Maria do Bouro as a destination to spend a few days: tranquil, reserved and monumental, its grandeur and architectural importance make you feel the force of the mountains and the timelessness of granite surrounds. Without any doubt, one of the Pousadas you have to visit.
The imposing main building of this hotel in Amares is unexpected after the twists and turns of a mountain road, where there are still old ladies with scarves on their head, lambs and goats in the pastures, and a rural and beautiful Portugal. Architecturally sublime, in a Souto Moura project, awarded the Pritzker Prize in 2011 (the greatest architecture award in the world), whereas the stones available were used to build a new space, protecting the notion of the ruins in transformation, which had so much influence over the centuries of history of this space.
LOCATION:

IN AN AMAZING SPACE, A MEMORABLE GASTRONOMY
The bar of the Pousada, by the comfortable living room with a huge fireplace, is crossed by the river that comes from the mountains and carries water to the tanks and lakes of the monastery. It is the ideal place to have a warm and comforting drink on cold days, and the perfect atmosphere for a nightcap or a coffee after dinner.
The restaurant area at the Pousada of Santa Maria do Bouro is unique: set in the old kitchen of the Monastery, with the reconstructed original chimney, two impressive ovens and small food heating stoves cut into the stone, it is decorated with a huge granite table that has withstood all looting and bad weather, where the breakfast and dessert buffet is served.
In the hallway of arches, is a carved source, which since the renovations of the XVII century, brings fresh mountain water to drink. Winter is the season of the lamprey, one of the major national gastronomic traditions.
Begin in the best way with the couvert - the seasoned olives, butters, olive oil, sea salt and toasted bread, as well as a snack trilogy. Encouraged by the little chicken pies, fish patties or tomatoes with fresh cheese and oregano, your appetite will feel encouraged to taste the flavors Minho has to offer. Among the starters, together with the caldo verde à minhota and chicken soup with mint; a carpaccio of octopus à lagareiro and alheira de caça on vegetables from the garden and apple, which are worth every bite you want to take. In what is referred to as snacks, rojõezinhos and sarrabulho give it a more regional touch, ideal for the snackers. Cod pie with onion and parsley is another local dish to try.
Besides the vegetarian dishes and risottos for those who prefer more known flavors; is the flagship Polvo (octopus) à Lagareiro; the Bacalhau (cod) à narcisa, typical of Braga; or the much appreciated "Bacalhau à moda do Convento do Bouro". Among the meat dishes, the rojões à moda do Minho, the rice "galo pica no chão"; the huge veal chop; and the delicious rice of cabrito mamão, all bringing the air of the mountain to your table.
In the secular granite table try the amazing desserts: pudding abade de priscos, the quindão, the golden soup, the papo d'anjo, and the chocolate mousse. The Amares orange pie, typical of the region, is very fresh and slightly sweet, ideal to finish the meal. In this ancient monastery, there are many heavenly things, and the meals in this amazing space are only one of them.
The Convent’s kitchen is known for its specialities and its fabulous cuisine, framing a magnificent environment that will provide you with a meal worthy not of a monk but of a King. For that reason we invite you to sit at our table and travel in time and delight yourself with what time cannot destroy: our rich cuisine!
