Description

The Parador of Lorca (Murcia) is located within the historical precinct of the Castle of Lorca, e meeting point of three cultures (Islamic, Jewish and Christian). It was declared Monument of Cultural Interest on June, 3rd, 1931.

The Parador is a new-build construction, erected on a vast archaeological site, which was discovered during the preparatory excavations for said construction. The archaeological site is partially embedded in the building, while another part lies outside the building's walls. Among the different areas of the archaeological site, we can highlight the following elements:

    • 15th century synagogue (this is the most important of the archaeological sites and is embedded in the Parador thanks to a closing preserving it against meteorological influences and allows public visiting)

    • House VII, which is part of the synagogue complex

    • House VI from the Jewish epoch (15th century)

    • Jewish house with a 'miqwé' (ritual bath with public character), of the 15th century

    • Islamic cistern, used as a powder keg during the 19th century

    • Almohad wall, 13th century

    • Remains of Islamic-Caliphate buildings - 10th to 11th century

All of these sites have a strong presence due to their proximity to the Parador. Part of the walls of the castle's precinct is directly linked to the Parador and has been remodelled, as the 'Alfonsina Tower', located in some distance from the hotel.
